Following Ruby Rose's departure, Gotham city has found its new 'Batwoman'.
Javicia Leslie will see a brand new iteration of the infamous Batwoman appear on our screens in the near future, picking up the mantle from the series' previous star, Ruby Rose.
Leslie will play a new character in the title role of the CW superhero series, which will see her portray a "highly skilled and wildly undisciplined" character named Ryan Wilder. Leslie is relatively unknown but has had some brief appearances in a number of productions including the 'MacGyver' reboot with Lucas Till.
"I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honoured to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community," Leslie said.
Ruby Rose famously exited the series earlier this year, after only appearing on the show for its first season. Rose's depiction of the iconic Kate Kane/Batwoman persona wasn't very well received by fans, and her costume was also slated to the high heavens. Following her exit, producers of the series were keen to find another member of the LGBTQ community to play the vicious vigilante.
Following the new casting news however, Rose posted a photo of Leslie on Instagram, exclaiming her delight: "OMG!! This is amazing!! I am so glad Batwoman will be played by an amazing Black woman. I want to congratulate Javicia Leslie on taking over the bat cape. You are walking into an amazing cast and crew. I can’t wait to watch season 2 you are going to be amazing!!"
We're looking forward to seeing what fresh superhero anarchy Javicia Leslie can breath into this new 'Batwoman' in the future.
