Hey, if Brendan O'Carroll can do it…
Based on his existing Radio 2 series Father Figure, the sitcom will also star Pauline McLynn as Mrs Doyle.
Before you start mistaking it for a Father Ted homage (we know Pauline isn't in to them), it's actually about fatherhood. Jason plays Tom, a dad of two who keeps buggering up thanks to his family at large and the fact that he's a misfortune magnet.
The Beeb's comedy commissioner, Cheryl Taylor, said: "Jason Byrne is a bright and bouncy performer and already much loved by comedy enthusiasts everywhere. We're really looking forward to developing the new pilot."
Byrne chimed in the following when talking with comedy website Chortle: "I am delighted to finally announce that we will be making a pilot of my sitcom Father Figure. It’s been a big dream of mine and I’d never have thought I would get the chance to join the ranks of the television sitcom world (again, if Brendan O'Carroll can do it…).
As has become customary, Jason has largely pilfered all the storylines from his own experience: "The characters all come from real life and the outrageous situations Tom gets into have, more often than not, actually happened to me. The people in my life will never realise that it’s them I’m writing about, unless my wife and two sons, mother, father and best mate ever watch it."
Needless to say, expect Father Figure to hum of Mrs Brown's Boys as it's being executive produced by Stephen McCrum.
Enjoy a clip from the existing radio show below. Includes the throttling dead of the term "dogging." Which the cast find hilarious.
