There's nothing quite like settling into a good box set and just completely engrossing yourself in a new series.

It doesn't even have to be a new series; it can be an old familiar that you haven't followed up on in quite some time. With Sky Box Sets, you can catch up on the shows that everyone's talking about and there's plenty to choose from, with critically acclaimed shows and cult favourites sitting side by side in one handy place.

Here's six Sky Box Sets you should be watching that come highly recommended.

6. MAD MEN

It's won countless Emmys, Golden Globes and critical accolades and pretty much revolutionised how we look at dramas and, to some degree, soap operas in the modern age. A towering central performance by Jon Hamm as the engimatic Don Draper, Mad Men follows a New York advertising agency through the shifting tides of '60s America. It takes in some hefty subject matter, including racial relations in America, women's role in both business and society, how we deal and interact with advertising and, y'know, amazing costumes and fantastic music.

5. THE BLACKLIST

Although people of a certain vintage may remember James Spader from Sixteen Candles and other '80s teen comedies, his career's gone through a remarkable metamorphosis since then. Spader plays Raymond Reddington, a former US Naval Intelligence operative who absconded and became a criminal kingpin in the intervening years. Out of nowhere, he puts himself into the FBI's custody and claims he can help them track down the most wanted criminals across the globe - his 'blacklist', as he calls it. It's high-octane action mixed with spy thriller elements, as well as Spader's unique with and charisma on full display.

4. MODERN FAMILY

Who doesn't love Modern Family? Honestly? The parallels between it and The Simpsons (when it was good) aren't without merit. Stephen Levitan, one of the showrunners of Modern Family, spent a good part of his early career in the writing room of The Critic, Al Jean's sidequel to The Simpsons. The cast of characters, however, are the real stars of the show. Ty Burrell as Phil Dunphy, the slightly immature-but-well meaning father, Julie Bowen as Claire, his high-strung wife, Ed O'Neill as Jay, the cantankerous father-in-law who's married to Gloria, played by the distractingly beautiful Sofia Vergara. Our favourites? Mitchell and Cameron, played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet.

3. HANNIBAL

Arguably one of the most visually rich TV series ever made, Hannibal's equal parts gory horror and arthouse film. Set before the events of Silence Of The Lambs, it follows a young Dr. Hannibal Lecter as he assists the FBI with tracking serial killers whilst he himself is one. Starring Casino Royale's Mads Mikkelsen as Dr. Lecter and Hugh Dancy as Will Graham, his FBI counterpart, Hannibal is brilliant, disturbing, unforgettable television that is really worth your time. It's a crying shame it was cancelled so soon, but thanks to Sky, you can relive the horrors all over again.

2. PENNY DREADFUL

Another TV series that really does blur the lines between conventional TV and movies, Penny Dreadful is a sort of Marvel's Avengers match-up of Victorian horror. Frankenstein, Mina Harker, Dorian Gray and many others are stalking the streets of London and terrorising the innocent. It's got a fantastic cast, too. Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, Josh Hartnett, Billie Piper all star whilst the special effects, visuals and storytelling on show really is top-tier stuff.

 1. THE AFFAIR

Easily the most talked-about TV series in recent years, The Affair is revolutionary drama that's set from two uniquely different viewpoints. The Wire's Dominic West is an author vacationing with his family in The Hamptons when he meets Ruth Wilson, a married waitress who's dealing with her own issues. The two begin a torrid affair that slowly unravels both of them, whilst their significant others try to make sense of the change in them. What makes The Affair so fascinating and so different is that each episode is split in two - one from West's perspective and one from Wilson's, with scenes repeated with dramatically different views and inflections in each. That might seem a bit gimmicky, but it absolutely works in the context of the story. Highly, highly recommended.
