Ray D'Arcy began his run on Saturday night television last night and, for all intents and purposes, it did reasonably well.
Except for the fact that they had ex-Munster player Donnacha O'Callaghan on at the same time as the England V Wales match. Meanwhile, Tulisa Consta-can't-spell-her-name-properly was on and basically spent her slot talking about the fact she can't talk about her legal issues. So nothing doing there.
Sean O'Callaghan, the "Internet Dancing Man" who was bullied online and then had a spectacular party thrown in his honour was on whilst Wheatus - yes, the band that did Teenage Dirtbag and played in your SU Bar - did a rendition of their only song with a choir. A choir, folks.
However, the star of the night was our own Tommy Tiernan. Sure, he might be predictable and constantly uses Oirishness as a joke, but he's like your Dad telling you a dirty joke. You can't help but chuckle at him. Also, did anyone realise that Tommy Tiernan has now become a middle-aged Ronnie Drew? For our viewers outside of Dublin, replace Ronnie Drew with Bearded Roy Keane and you'll get what we're talking about.
In any case, Tiernan gave a good showing of his latest material including a discussion of something that's obviously close to his heart; his erectile dysfunction or his 'Soft Mickey' phase.
Here he is explaining it in detail:
"Just be clear, I haven't entered that phase." Jesus, Ray - insecure much? In any case, Tiernan's point about men feeling good about their lack of... well, hardness... is a relevant one. So, y'know, good for him.
So, overall thoughts? Lots of lightbulbs. Lightbulbs everywhere. It's definitely a lot more jazzy than The Late Late Show, but that's to be expected. It all essentially boils down to how you find Ray D'Arcy. He's a pretty divisive character at the best of times anyway and some people find his on-air personality grating.
From what we saw, there was less of his high-horse attitude and moaniness - which is definitely a plus.
