As it's the third weekend of the month, you may find yourself cautiously checking your bank balance this evening wondering how much could be left after all your gallivanting (as your ma would say). Well never fear, if you're short a few bob just plonk yourself on the couch with a glass of vino, or whatever your poison is, and check out some of what's on below.
Callan's Kicks
RTE 1: 9.35pm
It's the final episode of Oliver Callan's first full comedy series for RTE and safe to say he has proven to be quality entertainment of a summer Friday evening, although, he's no Mario mind. Tonight he is set to finish with his most ambitious sketch yet - encompassing the history of hurling in four minutes. It will feature a whole host of famous faces from the sport including DJ Carey as a guardian angel and Seán Óg Ó Hailpín as Mr Motivator. This, we have got to see. As well as that hilarity, we will also see An Taoiseach Enda Kenny address and depress the nation, Christy Moore's greatest hits, and Ray D'Arcy and Rachel Allen make their return.
The Reader
RTE1: 10:05pm
The movie that bagged Kate Winslet her long awaited Oscar - which if you have ever seen her in Extras - you will understand why that fact is so funny. The story is set in the aftermath of World War II, when a teenager embarks on a brief but passionate affair with an older woman (Winslet) who seeks solace from her misery in the stories he reads to her. (Ahh The Reader! It all makes sense now). She leaves him though, without much word of warning, but a decade later he meets her again while observing the Nazi war crimes trials, and is shocked to learn that she acted as an SS concentration camp guard during the war. Heavy stuff of a Friday night, but as an Oscar nominee for Best Picture, you know it will be worth sticking with.
Twilight
E4: 9.00pm
Be warned, the level of teenage angst in this may actually cause you to revert back to your own hormonal years, and it's even worse for this lot, they are vampires to boot too. Well one of them is, for now anyways. The very first installment of the Twilight franchise begins with young Bella moving to a small town called Forks to live with her dad. She's not long there when she spots Edward Cullen, the hot, pale dude that kind of looks at her like she's dinner most of the time. Anyways, as you may have realised from the three movies that came after this, they kind of hit it off. Look out for a rather epic game of baseball to a Muse song about half way through too.
The Singer Takes it All
Channel 4: 9:00pm
Alan Carr continues this talent show where you at home are the judges, the way of the future, so it is. You choose from singers that are all lined out on an 18-metre conveyor belt, dreams in their hands, all hoping for a shot at fame. It's like the thumbs up/thumbs down thing they used to do at the Colosseum in Roman times, except instead of being thrown to the lions, if you're not voted through you must face the indignity of disappearing through the doors. Where we assume no lions are waiting, but then we can't be sure.
The English Patient
BBC2: 11.05pm
Yet another war themed flick tonight, but this one is pretty much a classic at this stage. The story begins with an enigmatic, badly burned survivor of a Second World War plane crash, who is tended to by a French-Canadian nurse in a derelict Italian monastery. And what do you do in a derelict Italian monastery? Well tell stories of course! He ends up telling the nurse all about his passionate love affair with a married Englishwoman and we are brought along on the journey as the film flashes back to the story of their time together. It features an all star cast too with Ralph Fiennes, Kristin Scott Thomas, Juliette Binoche, Willem Dafoe, Naveen Andrews and Colin Firth (what isn't he in?).
Forever Young: How Rock 'n' Roll Grew Up
BBC4: 10.10pm
The 1950's saw the whole music scene transform completely with the advent of rock 'n' roll and hard core youngsters on guitars ushered in an entire new era, but where are they all now? This documentary explores how stars have coped with growing old after being symbols of rebellion from the genre's roots. It looks at those that have successfully (and unsuccessfully) made their comebacks and examines what happened to the mantra 'live fast, die young'.
