Were you watching EastEnders last night? Did ANYONE see this coming? They kept it under pretty tight wraps in fairness. In case you missed it and would like to know just what the hell we are talking about, it turns out that Shirley is...wait for it, Danny Dyer's MA! Well, Mick's ma, but we still just see Danny Dyer when we look at him.
The unexpected twist came in just the final moments of last night's episode, as a drunken Shirley told Phil she had to go say sorry to 'her baby boy'. Phil, and of course the rest of us, all assumed she was off to find her son Dean, but nope, in she walked to The Vic and went straight over to Mick. He assumed she was apologising for that whole 'trying to drown him when he was a baby' thing and just hugged her back, but Phil suddenly understood, and so did we... and then doof, doof, doof doof... and you know the rest.
Even Danny Dyer didn't know this storyline was coming up, telling Digital Spy; “It was a complete shock to me. Linda (Shirley) knew for three months before I did and she didn’t tell me, because she was told not to tell anyone."
"When I found out, Linda didn’t know that I’d been told, so I sent her a little text message saying, ‘Hope you’re having a good evening, mum!’ She rang me straight away afterwards so we could talk about it!"
Anyone else getting flashbacks to Kat and Zoe all those years ago? We can only hope that this Shirley and Mick storyline plays up to as good a climax as this famous EastEnders scene...
