Barbara Windsor is set to return to Albert Square this month when Peggy 'Get out of my pub' Mitchell comes back to help Phil. After swearing blind she was never returning after she quit the soap in 2010 Windsor will be back for a one off episode but the actress hasn't ruled out a permanent return to the show.
Speaking to The Sun Windsor said, 'Of course it has tempted me but who knows what the future holds? To be a part of such a great British institution is an honour. Going back was exactly the same as I had felt 19 years ago. I felt sick with nerves. I was the new girl again. I was absolutely overwhelmed to see all those familiar, friendly faces again. EastEnders will always be so very special to me.'
It's no secret how much I have always loved EastEnders and Peggy Mitchell and, by the number of times I'm constantly stopped by the British public and asked either 'when are you coming back?' or please say 'Get out of my pub' it seems they have too,' she added.
Windsor revealed she had been asked to go back on numerous occasions but never felt the story or time was right for her return until now. Peggy returns in order to sort out Phil who is in hospital after a car accident and has lost all hope. Apparently it was Steve McFadden and Perry Fenwick, who plays Billy, who persuaded Windsor to comeback to the show. The actress said, 'I was then told of the current storyline with Phil having been involved in a bad accident and he had given up on life. It seemed right to me that Peggy was the only person who could go back and give him a much-needed kick up the backside. All it took was a phone call from Perry. Steve was the reason I had no hesitation in returning to the show for this storyline. My admiration for him as an actor is way up there with the best.'
Windsor's episode will air on Friday September 20th.
