Considering how 'Modern Family' is heading into its tenth and final season, it's not surprising that the showrunners and creators are considering something like this.
Speaking to EW, co-creator Christopher Lloyd (not Doc Brown from 'Back To The Future') confirmed that a "significant character" will be killed off in the upcoming season, but obviously stopped short of confirming whom.
"We do deal with a death, which is certainly a topic that families have to deal with, and on television, it’s not easy to do because that’s a heavy subject. But at the same time, it would seem unusual for a family not to go through it," said Lloyd.
The precise details were kept schtum, however Lloyd did say that it "will be a moving event — and an event that has repercussions across several episodes." Again, considering it's the final season, there really is no telling who it could be and a lot of it could depend on the eventual spin-off that's looking more and more likely to happen.
Speaking further on the upcoming season, Lloyd said that "(there) is a significant change in the dynamics of the family that people maybe thought was going to happen at some point down the line that is happening sooner than expected."
What does that mean? Most likely it's in reference to a character dying, but the question remains - who will it be? 'Modern Family' will begin its final season on US television on September 26th.
