Created in 1999, 'Spongebob Squarepants' has gone on to become one of the most popular animated series in recent history. A marine biologist-turned-animator (really) created the show. It turns 20 years old today. 

While it may not have the same cache as 'The Simpsons' or 'Family Guy', 'Spongebob' has nevertheless remained a cultural institution. Now in its twelfth season and still producing new episodes, 'Spongebob Squarepants' isn't going anywhere. In fact a third 'Spongebob' movie is on the way after its first two hit movies in 2004 and 2015. Almost 250 episodes have aired altogether on its home channel of Nickelodeon.
