Belgium started as favourites to finish top of Group E, but a shock 1-0 defeat to Slovakia in their opening fixture has thrown that into some doubt. Despite being at or near the top of the FIFA world rankings over the last few years, they have yet to reach the final of a major tournament since they lost in the European Championship to West Germany in 1980, and there's a general feeling that their time may have come and gone. Romania were the most impressive of the nations in Group E in the opening round of fixtures, thrashing Ukraine 3-0, but they have a pretty dismal record in the finals of European Championships down the years, with that victory being their first since beating England in 2004.
