If you're unaware of who exactly Ryan Murphy is, there's a decent chance you'll have heard of at least one of the shows he's been involved with through the years.
The TV impresario was behind (deep breath) Glee, American Horror Story, Feud, American Crime Story, Scream Queens, The New Normal, Nip / Tuck ANNNNDD... Popular. Yes, the one with Leslie Bibb and Carly Pope. The New York Times reports that Murphy signed a five-year deal with Netflix that's worth somewhere in the region of $300 million, and will see Murphy make shows exclusively for the streaming service.
Murphy's exit from 20th Century Fox is a blow to the upcoming deal between Fox and Disney, with Murphy considered one of the crown jewels in Fox's television offerings. Murphy himself wasn't all that excited about the deal, and remarked in recent interviews about how he'd have to start putting Mickey Mouse into American Horror Story.
Fox and Murphy have had a long, fruitful relationship - and it seems clear that Netflix are hoping to replicate the same thing in their deal. Whether or not American Crime Story or Horror Story will continue on in Netflix remains to be seen, but it's going to be interesting stuff to say the least.
