There have been a lot of disappointing cancellations on Netflix of late. Fortunately 'Narcos: Mexico' is not among them.
Netflix is officially renewing the crime drama series for a third season. There will be some behind the scenes changes.
Wagner Moura, who played Pablo Escobar in the first two seasons of 'Narcos', will helm two episodes of the upcoming season.
Additionally, series showrunner Eric Newman is exiting his role after working on the show for five seasons.
He'll now be overseeing the show as well as "a broadening Netflix slate that includes the previously announced opioid TV drama 'Painkiller', 'Escape From Spiderhead' starring Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller, and 'The Upper World' starring Daniel Kaluuya."
Series co-creator Carlos Bernard will take over the reins.
Season 3 of 'Narcos: Mexico' features another time jump, now to the 1990s.
Reads the official description from Netflix: "Set in the 90s, when the globalization of the drug business ignites, Season 3 examines the war that breaks out after Felix’s empire splinters.
"As newly independent cartels struggle to survive political upheaval and escalating violence, a new generation of Mexican kingpins emerge.
"But in this war, truth is the first casualty - and every arrest, murder and take-down only pushes real victory further away."
Diego Luna, who plays Felix Gallard, will not appear in the new season. The season 2 finale saw him thrown in jail. In any case, the actor is committed to the upcoming 'Rogue One' prequel series at Disney+.
Returning cast members for season 3 will include Scoot McNairy, Jose Maria Yazpik, Alberto Ammann, Alfonso Dosal, and Mayra Hermosillo. Matt Letscher, Manuel Masalva, Alejandro Edda, and Gorka Lasaosa will also be back.
No word yet on a release date for the new season of 'Narcos: Mexico'.
