The future of 'Mindhunter' on Netflix is looking bleak.
'Mindhunter' season 2 launched on the streaming service five months ago to critical acclaim.
The stars of the show, Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany and Anna Torv, have been released from their contracts.
While the show hasn't been cancelled, a third season is very much up in the air right now.
“David is focused on directing his first Netflix film 'Mank' and on producing the second season of 'Love, Death and Robots',” a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement. “He may revisit 'Mindhunter' again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own.”
According to sources via Deadline, the cast love working with Fincher and most if not all would be willing to come back for another season. However they may become tied to other series in the meantime.
'Mindhunter' is based on the true-crime book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit written by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker. It follows two FBI agents (Groff and McCallany) and a psychologist's (Torv) working in the bureau’s Behavioral Science Unit.
Season one is set in 1977 to 1980 and largely features notorious serial killer Edmund Kemper (Cameron Britton). Season two is set in 1980 through 1981 and covers the Atlanta murders of 1979–81.
