'Nightcrawler' was an intense, twisted thriller that saw Jake Gyllenhaal give one of his finest performances in years and then clearly robbed when it came to awards season.
This time around, it feels like the reteaming of Dan Gilroy, Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo is more of a giant 'F U' to just about everyone who overlooked 'Nightcrawler' - because 'Velvet Buzzsaw' looks like it's holding absolutely nothing back.
Set in the world of modern art in Los Angeles, a series of paintings by an unknown artist appear on the scene and become critical darlings and earn millions in sales and resales. But before long, the paintings themselves seem to be at the centre of brutal murders that have a supernatural bent, leading Gyllenhaal's character to believe they're cursed.
Director Dan Gilroy has said in press that 'Velvet Buzzsaw' is similar to Robert Altman's 'The Player', and would feature a similarly large ensemble cast. You've got the aforementioned Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo, 'Stranger Things' alum Natalia Dyer, John Malkvoich, Billy Magnussen, Toni Collette, and Daveed Diggs from 'The Get Down' - so it's a pretty extensive cast, to be sure.
'Velvet Buzzsaw' hits Netflix on February 1st.
