'Nomadland' is now available to stream with Star on Disney+
Academy Award winner Frances McDormand stars alongside Academy Award nominee David Strathairn in 'Nomadland', which is adapted from Jessica Bruder’s highly-acclaimed book.
The story centres on Fern (McDormand), who, following the economic collapse of a company town in rural Nevada, packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad.
The third feature film from director Chloé Zhao, the movie features real nomads Linda May, Swankie and Bob Wells as Fern’s mentors and comrades in her exploration through the vast landscape of western America.
'Nomadland' recently won three Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for McDormand.
When and where can I watch 'Nomadland'?
'Nomadland' is now available to stream on Star on Disney+ in Ireland. The movie will be available to Irish exhibitors for theatrical performance once cinemas re-open.
Who stars in 'Nomadland'?
Fern is the star of the movie, and we follow her nomadic journey after she loses her job at a factory plant in Nevada. With nothing left in her home town, she decides to journey through the US, taking seasonal jobs here and there - ultimately trying to survive paycheque to paycheque.
What have I seen her in before: Before sitting down to 'Nomadland', chances are you've already been enthralled by a Francis McDormand movie. The star has been in a number of noteworthy movies such as 'Fargo', 'Burn After Reading', and 'Madeline', as well as her Oscar-winning movie role in 'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri'.
While journeying through the vastness of the American west, Fern encounters Dave. He is another nomad whom she meets during a community get together, and the pair strike up a close friendship.
What have I seen him in before: David will be a recognisable face to movie and TV viewers, as he has been played minor roles in a number of productions. His biggest acting appearances to date include movie roles in 'Good Night, and Good Luck' and 'Lincoln', while he lit up our TV screens on 'The Blacklist' and 'Billions'.
Who should watch 'Nomadland'?
A slow-burning character-driven drama, if real-life drama and struggle, discovery and wonder aren't enough to pique your interest, then knowing that the movie is a three-time Oscar-winning film surely will.
If you've seen 'Roma', 'Wild', and 'The Call of the Wild' in the past, then 'Nomadland' is the one for you.
