‘A Star is Born’ has taken the number one spot in the Ireland and UK box office for a second weekend, making a cumulative figure of £9,594m across the two countries since its release. It’s hardly a surprise given the rave reviews it has received – we ourselves called it “heart-breaking but hopeful” and “the new definitive Hollywood story” in our five-star review. Since watching it, we’ve been wondering, is there anything worth seeing that’s related to the film on Netflix?
We dug into the offerings from the movie and TV platform to come up with five recommendations for if you’re a fan of the Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga starrer:
‘La La Land’
Like ‘A Star is Born’, Oscar darling ‘La La Land’ follows a couple in the arts (he’s in music, she wants to act) trying to make it big against the tough, competitive scene that is LA. As it’s a film about making dreams come true, there are a few inevitable singalong songs along the way, including this showstopper that won the 2017 Oscar for Best Original Song.
‘A Star is Born’
You may or may not know this but the Cooper-directed version of ‘A Star is Born’ is actually the fourth rendition of the story and film title. Aside from the 1954 Judy Garland version, the most famous one is probably the 1976 ‘A Star is Born’, starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. Its musicality and story is the closest of all the versions to Cooper’s movie.
‘Gaga: Five Foot Two’
Lady Gaga is best-known to us as a singer, but ‘A Star is Born’ might make her more renowned as an actress. Still, it’s worth noting just how far the singer-songwriter has come to be the superstar we know her as now. ‘Gaga: Five Foot Two’ is a powerful documentary chronicling that journey, following a year in the life of Gaga as she produces and releases her fifth studio album, ‘Joanne’.
‘American Horror Story: Hotel’
Gaga had a handful of movie credits before ‘A Star is Born’, including ‘Machete Kills’ and ‘Sin City: A Dame to Kill For’, but it was in the TV series ‘American Horror Story’, specifically the ‘Hotel’ season of the show, that she first got attention for her acting ability. Gaga earned a Golden Globe for her performance in the miniseries – is she On the Edge of Oscar Glory next?
Last but not least, the 1975 movie ‘Nashville’ is similar to ‘A Star is Born’ in that it can be more aptly described as a drama that incorporates musical performances than a generic musical. Like ‘A Star is Born’, it is oriented around country music, and follows various struggling, distinct musicians as they try to make a name for themselves against a background of cultural change and political unrest.
