“What are we?” “Werewolves not swearwolves.”
How exciting is this? Taika Waititi – who was in Dublin just last weekend for the Irish premiere of his new blockbuster and debut superhero movie Thor Ragnarok – is working on a TV series based on a cult favourite of his.
In case you’re unfamiliar with it, What We Do in the Shadows is a mockumentary set in New Zealand about four vampires living together and trying to adjust to modern life. It is genuinely hilarious and an absolute must-see.
Speaking with Fandango, Waititi revealed “We’re trying to develop a U.S. version of What We Do in the Shadows. You know, set here in the states, but a TV show.”
Unfortunately that’s as far as the details go for now, but Waititi also mentioned to the outlet that a spin-off series for of What We Do in the Shadows – a project he has been working on with WWDITS co-star Jemaine Clement for TZNZ – is also making headway.
The show is called Paranormal Unit and it follows the two Wellington police cops who appear in WWDITS. The show is being described as "Motorway Patrol meets The X-Files".
Waititi hopes production on the series is set to commence soon. “We're also trying to start shooting in New Zealand. A spin-off following the two cops from the movie, as a sort of mockumentary X-Files [that takes place in] a certain small New Zealand town where they investigate paranormal activity,” he said.
Here’s hoping with the success of Thor: Ragnarok, which is out in cinemas now (read our review here), the ball will get rolling for all Waititi’s projects (we interviewed the director – you can check it out here) asap.
