Stephen Colbert has found himself in the news more than he'd like over the past week, but to be fair, he stuck to his convictions and evidently the President of the United States can't take a joke.
Colbert is being investigated by The FCC for using the phrase "c**k holster" on air. Which was beeped out. See, the thing is, Donald Trump appointed the dude in charge of The FCC, Ajit Pai, who said he would "apply the law" and “take appropriate action.”
Well now the powerful writer's union, The WGA (Writer's Guild of America) have come out all guns blazing in defence of Colbert.
"Pai’s remarks are just the latest in a series of statements by the current administration indicating a willful disregard of the First Amendment. Colbert was poking fun at authority, a time-honored American tradition and an essential principle of democracy. What is obscene is not what Colbert said but any attempt by the government to stifle dissent and creativity. Our unions vehemently support Colbert and his writers and will fight for his or any individual’s right to publicly express his or her opinion of our elected officials."
Proper. F**king. Order.
The importance of lampooning the powers that be can never, ever be underestimated. Folks, there has been a lot of things written and said about the infected in-grown toenail of a man that is Trump, but attempting to censor comedy is another staggering red flag.
