Silicon Valley fans everywhere were dismayed by the news that TJ Miller would be leaving the show at the end of the fourth season.
Miller, who played Erlich Bachman on the HBO comedy, mutually agreed with the network that it was time for him to move on according to a statement released at the time.
On one hand it does make sense that Miller would leave. The comedian has managed to build himself an impressive movie career on the back of the show's success and he was juggling a pretty hectic schedule over the coming years with Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One just one of several projects he has lined up.
On the other hand though, his exit does seem strange on the back of HBO's announcement that the show was being renewed for a fifth season. Is it possible there was a behind the scenes falling out of some kind?
The man himself appeared on Larry King Now to discuss his departure from the show and insisted "It was the right time."
"HBO and I kind of decided that this was a time that the character could leave. We'd written it in a place where there was an organic departure."
When King tried to suggest that Miller had become too big for the show, the actor was quick to dismiss that line of thinking.
"No, I'm so happy that I was on the show," he said, later adding that he's "really, really grateful" to have gotten a chance with Mike Judge. "Those guys I do think are the best in the game. I mean ... there is no one funnier working in television."
Larry King still wasn't buying the mutual agreement line though and pressed Miller even further.
"Why would they want you to leave?" King asked, to which Miller humbly responded: "Let's be honest, there's no way that the show isn't going to change and become better."
When discussing his post Silicon Valley future, Miller recalled advice he'd received from his wife.
"My wife, Kate, has always quoted David Bowie as saying that somebody is at their best creatively when they're in the water and their toes are barely touching the bottom. I think that's a really cute quote," he said. "It is good to be in an unstable and unsafe place."
Miller will be performing at the Cat Laughs Festival in Kilkenny this weekend.
