Although we didn't stick with it, Sons of Anarchy did hold our attention for a good few seasons.
However, when we dipped back in for the later seasons, it didn't have the same sheen of quality that the first couple of seasons had. Still, it lasted longer than Kurt Sutter's latest series, The Bastard Executioner, which Sutter himself canned yesterday. In a refreshingly candid interview, showrunner Kurt Sutter explained that basically nobody was watching the show.
Rather than face the inevitable axe (heh), Sutter decided to do the honourable thing and take The Bastard Executioner out behind the shed and put it out of its misery. Ah well. However, Sutter was more positive about the long-rumoured Sons of Anarchy spinoff that focused on rival motorcycle gang The Mayans.
"The network is very hot on the Mayans project, and I won’t run that show. For me, this is about finding the right writer and the next thing I will be doing is sitting down and interviewing to find a Latino writer, someone who understands the world and culture. I don’t want to just throw some white guy at it," explained Sutter.
You've got to admit, that's quite admirable of him. For one, he could have easily stepped in and had another successful series. Instead, he's doing the right thing and honouring its culture by getting someone who understands rather than his own perspective.
Whether the Mayans spinoff will have the same success as Sons of Anarchy remains to be seen, but it's clear from Sutter's comments that it's being pursued as a matter of urgency. Not only that, TV studio FX have signed a deal with Sutter to create and shepherd new shows, so he's on the hook for the moment.
