There could be a huge twist to come in the case of Steven Avery and 'Making A Murderer' as his new lawyer has revealed her plans to fully exonerate Avery not by having a new trial, but by making the state vacate his conviction and setting him free.
How? Well she's convinced she's got the real killer on the cards, and isn't afraid to point fingers (to an extent).
"Half of my exoneration cases have led to the apprehension of the real killer," Zellner told Newsweek in an in-depth feature. "I’ve probably solved way more murder cases than most homicide detectives."
In terms of new suspects, Zellner said: "We have a couple. I’d say there’s one, leading the pack by a lot. But I don’t want to scare him off, I don’t want him to run."
One new suspect that's been introduced via the Newsweek article is a man from Arizona, arrested in December for sex crimes, who Teresa Halbach called twice shortly before her death.
Zellner also plans to do what most viewers of 'Making A Murderer' desperately want someone to do: tear apart what appeared in the documentary to be explicit examples of police malfeasance, in particular in relation to the forensic evidence used to put Avery away.
"They used forensic science to convict [Avery], and I’ll be using it to convict them of planting the evidence." she told Newsweek.
"I think it’s pretty obvious that the blood evidence was planted, and the key was planted. The hood latch, I believe evidence was planted on the hood latch. Am I surprised this happened? Not at all. Do I think it’s good that the public knows it? Absolutely."
Avery’s appeal is said to be be heard within the next few months, so expect all of this to get real quite soon.
