Love/Hate will return for a fifth series, it has been revealed today. The award-winning Irish crime drama may even get a spin-off series, such has been the popularity of the Stuart Carolan's show.
Glen Killane, managing director of RTE Television, spoke to the Irish Independent about the show about the show's future. "It has really proven itself and still has legs in it", he said. "I can't say how long I see it going on for, but we're certain there'll be a season five. We're not looking beyond that point yet."
Love/Hate is proving to be one of Irish television's most popular exports in recent years, with seasons one and two recently broadcast in Australia, New Zealand, Asia and the Middle East. In fact, Australia and South Korea have recently moved on to season three.
Killane continued: "In terms of international exploitation of Love/Hate, you need about 20 episodes for some sort of cut through internationally. Drama is incredibly expensive and we can't afford to produce 20 episodes in a given year. But after season three, we're at 18 episodes, so we're close to have that critical mass and real genuine cut through."
As for a potential spin-off series, Killane was open to the idea: "That distinctive drama has worked for us and we want more of it. We're working on drama development and writing at the moment."
