Although it's been rumoured for a number of months now and acknowledged by showrunners DB Weiss and David Benioff, there's now finally something in the way of official confirmation from HBO that a spinoff to Game of Thrones is on the radar.

At the recent TCA Tour, HBO's programming chief Jeff Bloys acknowledged that a spinoff to Game of Thrones is being explored, but that it's a long, long way away from being a reality. "We don’t have any scripts, we’re not even close to saying ‘Oh let’s do this.’ But it’s a big enough property that we would be foolish not to explore it," said Bloys at the TCA press tour.

Bloys went on, saying that George RR Martin's world is so rich that they'd "be foolish not to look at it."

While this isn't the first time a Game of Thrones spinoff has been discussed, it's the first time that HBO has officially acknowledged that it's a possibility. David Benioff and DB Weiss were quizzed about the prospect some time ago and both stated that they were done with Game of Thrones once the series is complete, so it's unlikely they'll be still be involved.

George RR Martin, meanwhile, openly talked about the spinoff before and said that he has reams and reams of history developed for Westeros, Essos and everything that took place before the events of the series.

As it stands, there's just two seasons left of Game of Thrones with the penultimate season to debut this summer. No airdate has been confirmed as of yet.

Naturally, the question is whether or not there's an appetite for a spinoff and whether or not it'll have the same impact and level of quality that the original series had.
