UPDATE: It's official, the Veronica Mars movie is GO. The Kickstarter campaign hit it's $2 million target in less than 24 hours, reaching it's goal just before 1am Irish time.

If there's one thing cult TV fans know how to do it's get their favourite shows back on the air with petitions, but Veronica Mars fans have taken things to a new high by launching a Kickstarter campaign to take their beloved cancelled TV show to the big screen.

The fundraising effort for the Veronica Mars movie started earlier today. and had already hit over $310,000 by the time we started writing. They'll have to hit $2 million before the film starts shooting, but at the rate they're going it looks like it ain't too far off.

"We're going to do our best to include as many of your favourite characters as possible (we know that's important!) but it's possible that some actors won't be available during our shooting window," series creator Rob Thomas wrote on the campaign's Kickstarter page.

Did we mention fans can get themselves a role in the film too? Yup, depending on the amount they donate to the fund, they can nab a speaking role. If that's not within their budget there are other things on offer, like a private screening of the finished product, DVDs and Blu-rays of the original three seasons and their very own digital download of the movie.

Series star Kristen Bell, who you'll all know as the voice of Gossip Girl, is absolutely thrilled and took time to thank the fans this afternoon. "We have been waiting so long to make this movie dream a movie reality," said the actress. "We just have one more step to go."

They've already secured Warner Brothers as the film's distributor and, all going to plan, the Veronica Mars movie will make it to the big screen in 2014.
