As we know, Lucasfilm and Disney are now beginning work on rapidly expanding the Star Wars franchise, and have already roped in Rian Johnson and Game Of Thrones showrunners DB Weiss and David Benioff to start their own trilogies.
As far as what's involved with both of them, it's not yet clear exactly what they'll be about - but they won't be alone in their efforts. In an earnings call with investors, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that they are now developing "a few" Star Wars TV series, specifically for their planned streaming service.
"We’ve mentioned that and we are close to being able to reveal at least one of the entities that is developing that for us. Because the deal isn’t completely closed, we can’t be specific about that. I think you’ll find the level of talent on the television front will be rather significant as well," explained Iger.
Weiss and Benioff are apparently working on a new film series related to Star Wars, so it seems unlikely that they'd be drafted into any of this - but considering they worked on one of the most successful TV shows ever made, it seems like a wasted opportunity not to have them weigh in some fashion.
There's no word yet on a launch date for Disney's standalone streaming service either, but considering the amount of work being put into it, there's no doubt that when it does arrive, you'll know about it.
