After that shock ending on 'Bodyguard' last Sunday night, many people had come up with elaborate theories and suggestions as to how it was that it came to be.
Many suspected that Keeley Hawes' character, Julia Montague, had her death faked in order for her to possibly leak the information on the tablet out to the public so that she could make her play for the Prime Minister's job, possibly even with Richard Madden's help.
However, in an interview with RadioTimes, 'Bodyguard' writer Jed Mercurio made it plenty clear what was happening - namely, that Keeley Hawes' character was dead and she wasn't coming back.
"Keeley would have been available for the whole shoot, if we'd wanted her," said Mercurio. "But I'd already written the character to die after three episodes. That's what I wanted to do." He went on, explaining the logic - such as it is - behind killing off what's really a main character just three episodes in.
"I think there’s a certain expectation with series TV that it will always orbit around an equilibrium, in which nothing much changes for the main stars, and there are no drastic changes to the set-up, especially now things tend to run for several series."
"I like to try to do things that move the story on, and with 'Bodyguard' I wanted to have this event mid-series that would completely alter the dynamic," he explained.
Well, it certainly did that, that's for sure. Episode four of 'Bodyguard' airs on BBC One on Sunday at 9PM.
