Ever since American Horror Story burst onto the scene, it's managed to keep itself from becoming stagnant by constantly changing up the formula with each passing season.

There's been cannibals, cults, covens - and the upcoming eighth season is going to take the horror anthology series in a completely new direction, according to creator Ryan Murphy. At this year's TCA panels, Murphy announced the premise for the new season.

"It takes place in the future," explained Murphy at the TCA press tour. "It’s still topical, but (set in) the future, which I’ve never done... I think people will like it. It’s different from what we’ve done before.” Many believed that the eighth season would see the Murder House / Coven storylines cross over, as had been previously hinted, however Murphy explained that this is more likely to happen in the ninth season.

"We’ve already met about it and outlined it. But it won’t be next because some of the (cast members) are not available." So, thoughts? It's definitely a new direction, but it does feel like some of this is coming off the back of Black Mirror's success.

American Horror Story isn't exactly fixed on rails, so the idea of moving it into the future could work - but the question is exactly how it's done, and who'll star. No castings announced have been announced so far, but a lot of the success will ultimately depend on who returns and, of course, if the story is any good.
