It was confirmed just last weekend that 13 Reasons Why – the controversial series that follows the aftermath of when a high school student named Hannah commits suicide – will get a second season.
There’s been a lot of pondering about what storyline the new season could take and whether the character of Hannah will remain in the show. Well, showrunner for the Netflix series Brian Yorkey has revealed the first details about season 2 to Entertainment Weekly.
When asked if he always wanted another season of the show, Yorkey said that he did find that he wanted to continue the story when they wrapped season 1. He stated: “We saw Hannah’s version of events unfold, but there’s a lot more to be told also about those characters. To me, there’s a tremendous amount that I still want to know.”
He went on to confirm that Hannah, though deceased, will still be a part of the series, indicating that she would appear in flashbacks throughout the process of the trial.
Aside from the trial, the plot will also follow Jessica struggling to come to terms with her traumatic sexual assault.
Additionally, while there won’t be any more cassette tapes, a different form of analog technology will play a major role in the new season.
Yorkey also revealed that season 2 will take place only months after the first season ended.
As for all the cliffhangers, he says: “We’re going to answer all of the burning questions that people have about [the show]. Is Tyler going to do something? What’s going to happen to Alex? Will Bryce be brought to justice? We’re going to answer those questions but I think, even more, we’re going to continue to look very truthfully and very honestly at what they go through, even when it’s painful at times. But I think what we’re going to discover is, as they begin to emerge from this very dark time, there’s hope and there is some light to be found.”
