Netflix may have hit the goldmine and realised what people really, really want to watch - lots of rom-coms.
The video streaming giant has released viewing figures for it's third quarter of 2018, and the maths are staggering. It turns out that over 80 million subscribers worldwide have watched one of their "Summer of Love" rom-coms while the weather was scorching outside, and it's top player was 'To All the Boys I've Loved Before'.
'To All the Boys I've Loved Before' stars Lana Condor and Noah Centineo as the leads, and Netflix has said that the numbers have been high for this movie in particular due to repeat viewings. No exact numbers have been released, but they must have been substantial for this movie in particular to come out on top. The other big original hitters that Netflix released this year included 'Sierra Burgess Is a Loser', 'The Kissing Booth', and Lucy Liu's 'Set it Up'.
With news that Disney's 2019 streaming service will be pulling all of their titles from Netflix next year when their own platform launches, the company must already be planning what will fill the Mickey Mouse-shaped void. Netflix has said that they are already planning their next wave of original rom-coms for the future, so we'll more than likely see the same onslaught of summer love again next year.
