As we said yesterday, it's pretty clear that Netflix is aiming to take on the awards season with its recent output - and it's only going to continue in the future, going by this.

Deadline reports that Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce are set to play Popes Benedict and Francis respectively for a new film directed by City Of God's Fernando Meirelles that follows the decision by Benedict to relinquish his position and cede it to Francis. The Pope will be written by Anthony McCarten, who previously wrote Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory Of Everything and wrote the stage play on which the film is based.

Filming is set to begin in November, with no release date scheduled for Netflix as of yet. Pryce, as we know, recently played a religious leader on Game of Thrones - namely the High Sparrow - whilst Anthony Hopkins turned up in Darren Aronofsky's biblical epic Noah, with Russell Crowe and Emma Watson.
