The Crown season 2 is due to hit Netflix on December 8th of this year.
We couldn’t be more excited, but sadly the season will see Claire Foy (who also stars in new film Breathe) bow out as Queen Elizabeth.
The role earned Foy widespread acclaim and won her both a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award. However, series creator Peter Morgan has always said that he intended to replace key cast members in later seasons, to better portray the main characters as they age. So, as the character naturally ages, a new actress is stepping in to replace her, and the producers of the show have found a great actress in Olivia Colman.
Colman has an extensive filmography and TV credits to her name, having starred in Locke, Hot Fuzz, The Lobster and The Iron Lady, to name just a few of the movies she has starred in. She is probably best-known for her starring roles in TV series like Broadchurch, Peep Show, Fleabag and The Night Manager. For the latter, she won the Golden Globe, and she has also won 3 BAFTA Awards over her career.
Colman will portray the monarch for seasons three and four, which will be set after 1963, and she is the only confirmed cast member for now. Matt Smith, who plays Prince Philip, will also be replaced but who with has yet to be announced.
According to Variety, seasons 3 and 4 have not been officially ordered, but early production is said to be underway.
