If you’re looking for a new series to binge on Netflix, you might want to check this new Chinese drama series called ‘The Rise of the Phoenixes.’

Due for release in the next fortnight, the artistic director and costume designer is William Chang, who previously worked on the Oscar-nominated flick ‘The Grandmaster’ and has collaborated with Wong Kar-Wai on numerous productions including ‘In the Mood for Love’, ‘2046’ and ‘Chungking Express.’

The Mandarin series stars Chen Kun and Ni Ni (who starred opposite Christian Bale in ‘The Flowers of War’) and is directed by Shen Yan and Liu Haibo (‘Chinese Style Relationship’).

According to Deadline, “It is a story of power, desire, lust and love amongst people from different kingdoms in ancient China, all with the desire of rising to become The Great Phoenix. Ning Yi, played by Kun, is the sixth prince of kingdom who hides a dark past. Feng Zhiwei, played by Ni Ni, hides her true identity and has to cross-dress to survive in the male-dominated world.

“However, when a secret from the past rears its head, respected warrior Feng Zhiwei is forced to choose between revenge and her loyalty to ruling prince Ning Yi.”

Netflix has high hopes for its new Chinese period drama following the success of another 2018 historical drama, ‘Story of Yanxi Palace’, released around the world by the Chinese streaming service iQiyi.

Rob Roy, Netflix Vice President of Content – Asia, said: “We’re excited to offer a top quality title like The Rise of Phoenixes to our members around the world. We look forward to growing our Mandarin title catalog with more stories that bring to life the intriguing heritage of Chinese culture.”

The 70-episode series launched on Hunan Television earlier this month.

It will be available in more than a dozen languages around the world when it launches on Netflix on September 14th.
