Given that we have an entire generation of adults who grew up on The Simpsons, it's surprising that it's taken this long for the political class to try and co-opt it for their own means.

However, after failed US Presidential candidate Ted Cruz failed to make a comparison between The Simpsons and his potential voters, nobody's likely to try again. Cruz was speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference yesterday and said that he thought "the Democrats are the party of Lisa Simpson, and the Republicans are, happily, the party of Homer and Bart and Maggie and Marge."

All fine, except it's complete and utter tosh and the actual writers and producers of The Simpsons have lined up unanimously to counter Cruz's point. Firstly, Bill Oakley - who worked on the Steamed Hams sketch from The Simpsons - pretty much knocked Cruz's sentiments down in one tweet with this.

Next, Al Jean - who is currently the showrunner on The Simpsons...

As if to underline just how WRONG the whole thing, this particular tweet from writer Joe Berkowitz was liked by Yeardley Smith - who's voiced Lisa Simpson since the show's inception.

And for the final point, President Trump was predicted on The Simpsons in 2003 - with Lisa Simpson elected President and forced to deal with massive budget crisis that Trump had created in his term of office. So, y'know, it just doesn't add up at all.

But, hey, let's see more politicians try to use pop culture references because it's always fun to see people struggle and fail miserably.
