Even though it's only restarted production in the last week or so, 'The Batman' is already getting a TV spinoff for HBO Max.
It's been confirmed by several of the trade bibles that Warner Bros. are working on a new series for the streaming service that will focus in on Gotham Police Department. What's more, the series will be executive-produced by Terence Winter, who previously worked on HBO's 'Boardwalk Empire' and 'The Sopranos', as well as writing Martin Scorsese's 'The Wolf of Wall Street'.
Per the statement given to media, the series - which does not yet have an official title - will be "set in the world Reeves is creating for 'The Batman' feature film and will build upon the motion picture’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, ultimately launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms. The series provides an unprecedented opportunity to extend the world established in the movie and further explore the myriad of compelling and complex characters of Gotham."
Of course, this isn't the first TV series set in the expanded world of Batman and Gotham. Just last year, 'Gotham' finished out its five-year run, however, this series will be the first to be set in the same universe as a feature-length movie. While that series followed James Gordon's early career as a detective in the Gotham police department, it's not known if Jeffrey Wright - who plays Gordon in the upcoming movie - will be a part of the series, or Robert Pattinson for that matter either.
All in all, it's early days yet and the likelihood is that this series will be a long time in production. As mentioned, 'The Batman' has only just now resumed production and the release date set for October 2021 could very well shift again, like so many others.
That said, placing a talent like Terence Winter on the show sends a pretty big (bat) signal that the show is going to be much weightier and prestigious than has been attempted before.
