First-time talk-show host felt at home while handing out jokes from 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' and hearing some questionable ones from patrons back in his bar in Philly.
Rob McElhenney has taken over from Jimmy Kimmel on his late-night talk-show for two episodes this week, and the 'It's Always Sunny' star predictably delivered the laughs during his opening monologue.
The multi-talented star originally created the infamously boundary-pushing comedy series, which also stars his wife Kaitlin Olson, Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton and Danny DeVito. Since then, he's created Apple TV+'s 'Mythic Quest' series and is also set to star in the Disney+/Hulu documentary series 'Welcome to Wrexham' alongside Ryan Reynolds.
On last night's late-night gig, there were a few 'Sunny' jokes thrown into his monologue, a reference to Trump's flushing of documents down a toilet, and Joe Biden's alternative message aimed at gay men who are hoping not to catch Monkeypox.
However, the funniest moment comes from Rob's own bar, which he co-owns with Kaitlin. Called 'Mac's Tavern' and based in his hometown of Philadelphia, Rob has a drink on the house (using Jimmy's credit card) every time the "magic word" is said on the show by him or by a guest. His monologue finishes with some jokes back at the bar from a couple of patrons who look like they're getting heavy on the sauce for a Monday night.
In terms of guests for his first night in the presenter seat, McElhenney had 'Silicon Valley' and 'Eternals' star Kumail Nanjiani join him, followed by his 'Mythic Quest' co-star, Australian actor Charlotte Nicdao who unfortunately sprained her ankle when she was grabbing a slice of pizza.
Here's the full monologue.
Stay tuned for another night of late-night hosting from the star tonight, as he'll be joined by his BFF Ryan Reynolds and his wife and 'It's Always Sunny' co-star Kaitlin Olson.
Season three of 'Mythic Quest' begins on Apple TV+ later this year; 'Welcome to Wrexham' begins on Disney+ this August.
