The strain of 'Game of Thrones' on its stars has popped up in the media every now and again since the show ended.

Its star Kit Harrington, who played Jon Snow in the series, has now opened up about the psychological toll that working on eight seasons of 'GOT' took on him.

The actor revealed he had to take a year off after the series wrapped to take care of mental health issues.

It had been reported back in May 2019, which was when the final episode of 'GOT' aired', that he had checked into a mental health and wellness facility in order to tend to "some personal issues."

Kit Harrington spoke up about it for the first time on SiriusXM’s 'The Jess Cagle Show' (via THR).

He said that the emotionally intense "nature" of the series "directly" impacted him in reality.

"I went through some mental health difficulties after 'Thrones', and during the end of 'Thrones', to be honest," Harington told the radio presenter. "I think it was directly due to the nature of the show and what I had been doing for years."

The actor took a break after the show to "really concentrate on myself."

He added: "I’m really happy I did that."

As for returning to his career, Kit Harrington noted: "Just when I was wanting to come back to work the pandemic hit."

He said that filming an episode of 'Modern Love' season 2, in a role which sees him taking on an Irish accent, was to get back to having "fun."

He said: "You don’t have to live in that intense place all the time.

"Why don’t you do something that takes the weight off? Why don’t you do something fun?"

'Modern Love' season 2 debuts on Amazon Prime on Friday, August 13th.

He also stars in Marvel movie 'Eternals', which hits theatres on November 5th.
