According to overnight statistics from HBO, the company has said that the 'Game of Thrones' prequel has flambéed all other TV series like they were just dragon feed.
In case you thought interest in 'Game of Thrones' had peaked back in 2019, then think again. The first spin-off series fresh out of the gate, 'House of the Dragon', has overnight become the most successful premiere on HBO and HBO Max ever. The series is available to watch in Ireland and the UK via Sky Atlantic and NOW, and we're expecting similar results here (UPDATE: the episode was the most-watched HBO premiere in Europe ever).
According to the broadcaster, nearly 10 million people tuned in to the first episode of the series on Sunday night (2 am Monday morning Irish time).
Not only is the 'House of the Dragon' premiere the biggest in HBO's history, but it's also topped ever other season premieres this year, including 'Stranger Things' season four and 'Euphoria' season two. It truly is the time for the Targaryen reign to begin.
Casey Bloys, chief content officer for HBO and HBO Max, said of these fire emoji viewing figures: "It was wonderful to see millions of 'Game of Thrones' fans return with us to Westeros last night. 'House of the Dragon' features an incredibly talented cast and crew who poured their heart and soul into the production, and we're ecstatic with viewers' positive response."
The prequel series, which has been earning itself a lot of praise online, closely follows Milly Alcock as a young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, 172 years before the birth of her great (x7) grand-daughter Daenerys. Her father King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine) is the ruler of the seven kingdoms and her uncle Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) believes himself to be the rightful heir to the throne.
