It's easily the most darkly funny film of the '80s and it's gone on to become a cult classic, but sure enough, not even Heathers can escape the TV remake disease.
Actually, that's not fair. The Fargo TV series has been pretty spectacular so far, so let's hope this is along the same lines. It's been confirmed today that a TV anthology series is in the works based on the 1989 classic, Heathers.
An anthology, in case you didn't know, is when the cast of characters and setting changes with each season, but they're all somewhat loosely connected. Think like how Fargo's first season is sort-of connected to the second or how American Horror Story had most of the same cast in each season. That kinda thing.
This time around, it's not the Heathers ruling the school - it's the outsiders. The plot goes that the school is controlled by a group of Heathers, but they're all somewhat different from the original.
Heather McNamara (played by Lisanne Falk) is a black lesbian; Heather Duke (Shannen Doherty) is a male who identifies as gender-queer whose real name is Heath and Heather Chandler (Kim Walker) has a body like Martha Dumptruck. For those that don't remember, Martha Dumptruck was the girl who was ruthlessly bullied by the Heathers in the original. So, essentially, it's turning it all on its head somewhat.
It's in the early stages yet and no casting has been announced, however the hope is that this pilot will be picked up where previous attempts to get a Heathers TV series failed. Three pilots so far have failed to make it to series, however the hope is this is the one that'll get through.
Now, let's all remember how genuinely messed up Heathers was.
