In a promotional video for 'Fire & Blood', the upcoming quasi-encyclopedia for the world of 'Game of Thrones', George RR Martin weighed in on a theory that's been doing the rounds for the years about Jon Snow.
First, a little context.
Melisandre, the Red Witch, repeatedly talked about Azor Ahai, a legendary warrior who lived 8,000 years before the events in the series and was responsible for stopping the first invasion of Westeros from the White Walkers. Melisandre believed that Azor Ahai was the Prince Who Was Promised, and that it was originally Stannis Baratheon. Of course, when he died, she then changed her reading of the prophecy and claimed that it was Jon Snow.
The last season made pretty heavy nods to the prophecy and that it was Jon Snow. The prophecy stated that Azor Ahai reborn / the Prince Who Was Promised had to be born of dragon blood - we know this from the Tower of Joy flashback scene and the fact that he's actually a Targarayen - and that he was born underneath 'a bleeding star'.
In the fight outside the Tower of Joy, one of the knights sent to protect baby Jon Snow was Ser Arthur Dayne, better known as the Sword Of The Morning. His sword was also called Dawn. We know he died protecting Jon Snow, hence the 'bleeding star' bit.
This most recent video, however, is another bit of evidence lining and confirming the theory. The video is George RR Martin discussing Balerion the Dragon, one of the three dragons Aegon the Conqueror brought to Westeros when he decided to take over.
Martin explains that "(there) is a lot of speculation that in some sense he saw what was coming 300 years later, and wanted to unify the Seven Kingdoms to be better prepared for the threat that he eventually saw coming from the north — the threat that we are dealing with in A Song of Ice and Fire."
Here's the video.
The threat he's discussing here is the return of the White Walkers. One of two theories come from this. One is that Aegon conquered Westeros purely so he could ensure they'd be defeated if and when they arose in his lifetime. Aegon would have then believed he himself was Azor Ahai.
The other is that Aegon installed his family line in Westeros, knowing that some day, his family and his descendants would have to take on the White Walkers and that one of them would be Azor Ahai. Given how Jon Snow's real name is Aegon Targaryen - the son of Rhaegar Targayen and Lyanna Stark - he now fits the bill for Azor Ahai, the Prince Who Was Promised.
