It's a brave man that asks Colm Meaney if he ever feels stupid.

There's few braver television hosts than Tommy Tiernan mind, and that's exactly the question he put to Colm Meaney about acting in Star Trek.

Meaney played Chief Miles O'Brien on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine for almost twelve years. And for our money he was the most positive representation of Irishness in popular culture.

That being said, starring in a science fiction series was probably miles away from where Colm Meaney expected his career to go when he first started out in acting. Which we're guessing is why Tiernan put the question to him. Have a look at the response below.

The Glasnevin native looked incredulously at the audience before turning back to host and quipping "do you ever feel stupid in that hat?"

The pair then laughed together while Tiernan regained his composure and elaborated on the point he was trying to make. That a lot of great actors take on roles where a lot of their dialogue is "techno babble" (as Meaney calls it) and Tiernan was wondering how they manage to get through it without feeling foolish.

Meaney offered some tricks for how he managed with some of his more difficult lines (turning away from camera halfway through so they could loop it if he got stuck).

Ultimately Meaney confirmed that despite how it might appear to some (or Tiernan in any case), no he didn't feel 'stupid'.

"I know what you mean, I know what you're talking about. But it was surprising that no we didn't feel stupid all the time."
