Any potential 'Buffy' reboot will go ahead without the involvement of the original Buffy Summers.
One of the most memorable fantasy TV series from the late '90s and early '00s has been cast into the spotlight in recent weeks following allegations made towards creator Joss Whedon. However, should a 'Buffy' reboot ever come out of the woodwork, Sarah Michelle Gellar has said that she will not be returning to slay another day.
Gellar spoke to Mario Lopez on his podcast this week, confirming that her time as Buffy Summers at Sunnydale is well and truly over. The 43-year-old told the host: "What worked for 'Buffy' was that the monsters represented, they were a metaphor for the horrors of adolescence.
"I don't think it's me, I don't think I should be the one doing it."
She also added for good measure that she's "way too tired and cranky to put in that work again" but, should a reboot ever happen, she has given it her blessing. If the story holds up, "people are calling for that" she continued.
Given the current spotlight on the series, due to allegations against Whedon, Gellar declined to comment further on the matter. Her 'Buffy' costar Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia Chase in the series, was the first star to accuse Whedon of creating a toxic and uncomfortable work environment while the series ran.
Gellar, along with other stars from the series such as Michelle Trachtenberg and Clare Kramer are among those who also spoke out. Trachtenberg also said that there was one rule on set for Whedon: "He's not allowed in a room alone with Michelle again."
David Boreanaz, who played Angel in the series and its spin-off, is the latest 'Buffy' actor to highlight his time on set. He responded to Charisma, tweeting: "I am here for you to listen and support you. Proud of your strength."
There have been rumblings of a 'Buffy' reboot on the cards for a number of years now. Joss Whedon was believed to be executive producing the series. However, development of the series is likely to be put on hold for the time being.
Sarah Michelle Gellar reiterated her previous Instagram statement to Lopez on the podcast, saying: "I am more focused on raising my family and surviving a pandemic currently, so I will not be making any further statements at this time. But I stand with all survivors of abuse and am proud of them for speaking out."
Gellar's previous statement on Instagram reads: "While I am proud to have my name associated with Buffy Summers, I don’t want to be forever associated with the name Joss Whedon.
"I am more focused on raising a family and surviving a pandemic currently, so I will not be making any further statements at this time. But I stand with all survivors of abuse, and am proud of them for speaking out."
