Artist Matthew Collings examines whether there are universal principles of what in art might be termed beautiful, by highlighting 10 of his favourite works. Among the objects he studies are cave paintings in the Dordogne, France; a Renaissance altarpiece; Michelangelo's work on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel; a surrealist painting by Rene Magritte; and a canvas made of rubbish by American artist Robert Rauschenberg.
