Melvyn Bragg introduces the 13th annual ceremony from the Dorchester in London, in front of a 'star-studded' audience. Thirteen arts categories will be contested, featuring three special awards. Nominees include: in the pop section, Elbow and Estelle; for classical music, Alfred Brendel's Retirement Concerts and the Messiaen Festival; in TV drama, The Devil's Whore, The Shooting of Thomas Hurndall and The Children; and in literature, Tom Rob Smith, Kate Summerscale and Linda Grant. Michael McIntyre goes up against Pulling and previous winners Gavin and Stacey for the comedy award; and the shortlisted films are In Bruges, Man on Wire and Hunger.
