The Somme 1916: From Both Sides of the War commemorates the centenary of one of the biggest events of World War I.
Last week’s programme gave a fascinating insight into what led to the offensive and the events of its bloody first day. This week’s episode, called ‘Defense in Depth - Verteidigung in der Tiefe’, also gives new perspectives on the famous battle as historian-presenter Peter Barton analyses how an Allied advance on objectives went from lasting weeks to months. As a result of this, more lives were lost on the battlefield. Barton also highlights where the British got it wrong and the Germans got it right when it came to tactics and orientation of the warring landscape.
