Anthony Hopkins became a household name, while both he and Jodie Foster picked up acting gongs for this brilliant thriller that gave the world the now iconic Hannibal Lector. Hopkins plays Lector, a frighteningly intelligent, supremely cultured doctor, who is also a complete psychopath. When a new serial killer by the moniker Buffalo Bill starts offing folk, trainee FBI Agent Clarice Starling is tasked with getting the cannibalistic genius to help with the police investigation, before another innocent young woman is murdered. Superbly directed by Jonathon Demme, this is a fantastic film that has only managed to get better with age. Hopkins and Foster are excellent, and spark off each other with an eclectic intensity; with Hopkins bringing a petrifying edge to Lector, causing you to almost like him, yet be terrified of him at the same time. If you haven't already seen this, grab the popcorn, and make sure you have a pillow/significant other to hold on to.
