The movie that bagged Kate Winslet her long awaited Oscar - which if you have ever seen her in Extras - you will understand why that fact is so funny. The story is set in the aftermath of World War II when a teenager embarks on a brief but passionate affair with an older woman (Winslet) who seeks solace from her misery in the stories he reads to her. (Ahh The Reader! It all makes sense now). She leaves him though, without much word of warning, but a decade later he meets her again while observing the Nazi war crimes trials, and is shocked to learn that she acted as an SS concentration camp guard during the war. Heavy stuff of a Sunday night, but as an Oscar nominee for Best Picture, you know it will be worth sticking with.
