A hard-hitting drama about life inside the Magdalene Laundries, this was a hugely controversial film when first released. In it, four young women are sent to a Catholic institution and forced to work in slave labour conditions, all the while being punished and abused by the nuns in charge both physically and mentally. Regularly listed as one of the best films to be released that year (2003), Peter Mullan's film is as important as it is gripping.
