A hard-hitting drama about life inside the Magdalene Laundries - one of the infamous Irish mother and baby homes that are once again in headlines in recent weeks. In it, four young pregnant women are sent to a Catholic institution and forced to work in slave labour conditions, all the while being punished and abused by the nuns in charge both physically and mentally. Regularly listed as one of the best movies to be released that year (2003), Peter Mullan's film is as important as it is gripping.
