This one-off ninety minute TV special is an adaptation of the LP Hartley novel of the same name that tells a tragic story of forbidden desire and betrayal. It's all told through the eyes of impressionable boy Leo Colston, who has been invited to stay at his upper class friend Marcus's elegant family home in the summer of 1900. Leo is instantly enthralled by Marcus's older sister Marian, and finds himself drawn into a web of deceit as she pursues an illicit affair with tenant farmer Ted Burgess that crosses social boundaries. Unable to comprehend the true implications of the affair, Leo sets in motion a chain of events that ultimately prove the catalyst for a tragedy that will haunt him forever. So.... it's pretty much the exact same story as Atonement then. Right.
