Bound to be an emotional rollercoaster of a documentary, The Cult Next Door is inspired by an extraordinary event from November 2013, when three women were rescued from a house in Brixton, London, where they had been held captive for 30 years. Their captor and “guru” was Aravindan Balakrishnan, who had established a Maoist collective in the 1970s that had gradually dwindled to a small group of women whom “Bala” brainwashed and in some cases sexually abused. One of the women, Katy, was Balakrishnan’s daughter. Katy is interviewed and recalls Bala’s methods. Alternately absurd, comic, horrific and tragic, director Vanessa Eagle’s doc is sure to be a poignant experience.
